We will visit the Nasrid palaces:
Palace of the Mexuar: the oldest of the palaces, where you can visit the Mexuar Room, the Oratory, the Golden Room and the Mexuar Courtyard.
Palace of Comares: this was the Sultan’s official residence and the place where the throne room was situated. It includes the Court of the Myrtles, the Room of the Ship and the Chamber of the Ambassadors.
Palace of the Lions: considered to be the pinnacle of Nasrid art, it comprises the Hall of the Muqarnas, the Courtyard of the Lions, the Hall of the Abencerrajes, the Hall of the Kings, the Hall of the Two Sisters, the Ajimeces Gallery and the Daraxa Observation Point.
In addition to the three palaces, this monument contains other rooms of singular importance:
The Emperor’s Chambers: built when Carlos V decided to settle in Granada and later used by Washington Irving. This area lets you visit the Observation Point, the Court of the Grated Window and the Garden of Lindaraja.
The Partal: this area includes the Portico Palace, the Gardens and Walkways, the Rauda, the Palace of Yusuf III and the Promenade of the Towers.
That is included in the registration fee.
The Palace of the Cordova is at the end of the Paseo de los Tristes, by the river Darro and at the bottom of Cuesta del Chapiz in what was the Spanish-Muslim neighbourhood of Rabad al Bayda.
This is a renaissance building surrounded by beautiful gardens and groves. Its inner atrium was made with Gothic elements and the ceilings are coffered in the Mudéjar style. Built between 1530 and 1592 in the Placeta de las Descalzas, it was moved to its current location at Cuesta del Chapiz in 1960. The City Council acquired it in 1983, and it houses the Municipal Archive, with its rooms and gardens used for celebrations and official ceremonies.
The Alpujarras stretch from Granada to Almería. To follow this route, which joins the capital cities of both provinces, a series of mountain passes are used so as not to cross the massif formed by the Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Gádor and La Contraviesa. This region was the last Moorish stronghold of the Iberian Peninsula because it was so isolated. The numerous fortresses found here (watchtowers, castles, forts and towers) are proof of this.
> more informationThe northern region of the province of Granada is home to one of the Iberian Peninsula’s most unique landscapes: a semi-desert featuring a succession of tens of thousands of gullies and badlands surrounded by mountains and the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. In order to promote this and bring it to the public’s attention, several institutions (Granada Provincial Council, associations of municipalities, development groups, the IGME, the Universities of Granada and Jaén, and local associations) have supported the inclusion of the Granada Geopark in the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks.
The Granada Geopark is one of the few natural deserts in Europe; a place where you can walk, cycle or ride on horseback among seductive badlands, geological landscapes sculpted by erosion into rocky outcrops, gorges, river canyons, sharp gullies, clay ridges and a thousand other capricious forms.
